What is Counselling | Therapy | Psychotherapy
Counselling | Therapy | Psychotherapy is also commonly called as talk therapy. A talk therapy must not be mistaken for a casual dialogue or conversation that a person could have with a friend or family. Talk therapy with a therapist is a skill-based conversation. A therapist is trained to listen closely to their clients. To what they say and to what they may not be able to put together in words. Therapy aims to provide a wide range of customised treatment plans that help and encourage an individual to identify, challenge and change troubling thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Therapy is particularly helpful and effective when done with a mental health professional. Based on regular personal interactions.
How Counselling | Therapy works?
I believe in playing the role of the facilitator during my counselling | therapy sessions. Practicality and collaboration play pivotal roles in the counselling | therapy process. I ensure that the client is assured of confidentiality, non-judgemental, objective, and professional counselling. Identifying goals, hopes, and expectations for what one wants to change or achieve through counselling are central to my sessions.
I empower clients to develop an insight and understanding of their concerns and facilitate the development or enhancement of the required skills, behaviours and attitude as coping mechanisms to combat the concerns of the client. There really is no shortcut to change or fixing a problem. It takes time, trust, efforts and sincere partnering and voluntary attempts to manifest the desired results.
My Treatment Methodology
I use a mix of CBT widely known as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, DBT known as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, IPT known as Interpersonal Therapy and the Psychodynamic Therapy.
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, goal-oriented type of psychotherapy. I use it to treat or manage mental health conditions and emotional concerns. I help to take a close look at their thoughts and emotions. I help them understand how their thoughts affect their actions. Through CBT, I help clients unlearn negative thoughts and behaviours and learn to adopt healthier thinking patterns and habits.
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): DBT is a type of talk therapy that is based on cognitive behavioural therapy, but it’s specially adapted for people who experience emotions very intensely. My goal is to use DBT to strike a balance between validation (acceptance) of who the client is and their challenges and the benefits of change. I help clients learn new skills to improve emotion regulation. It could involve both individual and group therapy.
- Interpersonal therapy (IPT): This is a short-term form of therapy. It helps clients understand underlying interpersonal issues that are troublesome, like unresolved grief, changes in social or work roles, conflicts with others and issues relating to others. I help clients learn healthy ways to express emotions and ways to improve communication.
- Psychodynamic therapy (PDT) This is a short-term form of therapy. I help clients understand underlying interpersonal issues that are troublesome, like unresolved grief, changes in social or work roles, conflicts with others and issues relating to others. I help clients learn healthy ways to express emotions and ways to improve communication.
