Who knew educational institutions world-wide would be uncertain about when they could begin with fresh intakes for their new academic year. Who knew exams and exam results would be postponed without a definite date rescheduled. Who knew the Gen Z students world-wide would be staring at a future they feel uncertain about. Covid19 has surely ushered many into unprecedented challenges, whether their plan was to study abroad or in India.
“But, where there are challenges, there may also be hidden opportunities for growth and success”
Here is a list of ideas that could help students turn around this strange situation into an opportunity –
Additional Online courses
Include the ones that help you gain additional knowledge (Coursera, Udemy, etc) in the areas of your interest. Make sure you also sign up for the online courses that are recognized by an Educational Institution and are relevant to the career you wish to pursue. A high schooler who pursues a beginner’s course in the subject that s/he wishes to study at university, makes him/herself ahead of their peers academically. University graduates could consider courses in areas such as – Graphic design, Digital media marketing, Coding, etc. These subjects help procure freelance jobs, helping youngsters make better use of their time.
Learn a Language
Students aiming to study abroad, who also have proficiency in a language other than English, increase their ability to assimilate better In the foreign country that they wish to pursue a degree or choose to migrate to.
“Motivation to deal with another day is a fire that can be ignited only from within. No words, no motivational speaker, no spouse, no parent, no one can ignite that for you”
Virtual Internships
A lot of jobs have moved online. Whether you are a high schooler or a graduate, making some pocket money on the side never hurts. Look for technical support jobs at KPOs, Tele calling/Telemarketing, Content writing, Teaching Online, etc. Interviewers both in colleges and at HR departments in an organization often ask candidates how they spent their time during a gap between their education or employment. Be prepared to answer a question like “How did you spend your time during the COVID19”. The answer/s of a candidate helps the interviewer gauge the candidate’s personality and aspirations. The more engaging you sound, the more positive impression you make.
Volunteer for a Cause
There can never be enough goodness out there in the world. Each one could be going through their own share of troubles that may or may not be apparent to others. There are a number of ways one could help. A clean-up drive is done with adequate social distancing, contributing to blood donation camps, teaching, participating in food preparation and distribution drives, even the act of reaching out and being a good listener to the distressed through a hotline counseling site could help save lives or make someone’s day.
